'de Rand' operates on behalf of the 19 Flemish Rand municipalities, with special emphasis on the six municipalities providing language facilities. ‘de Rand’ is financially assisted by the Flemish Community and the Flemish Brabant province.

The activities ‘de Rand’ undertakes in the ‘Rand in the widest sense’ are different from those in the six municipalities enjoying language facilities, where it offers front-line cultural, youth and sport services. The local authorities are responsible for these tasks in the other 13 municipalities located in the 'Rand', while ‘de Rand’ operates on a companion basis, lending support to the municipalities in the case of ‘language promotion.


Seven community centres

'de Rand' has seven community centres: de Boesdaalhoeve, de Bosuil, de Kam, de Lijsterbes, de Moelie, de Muse and de Zandloper. Six of them are located in municipalities with language facilities. ‘de Rand’ publishes the RandKrant, a monthly magazine for people living in the Flemish Rand.

Language promotion initiatives

The tasks assigned to ‘de Rand’ in terms of language promotion, along with reception and integration services for non-Dutch speakers, include:

  • offering more opportunities for people to learn Dutch
  • helping people learning Dutch to put what they learn into practice
  • organising events for expats
  • ensuring 'clear' channels of communication between Dutch speakers and non-Dutch speakers
